Reading – Year 1

Year 1 - Reading

This student began tutoring with very low reading comprehension and emerging decoding skills. Reading often felt difficult and discouraging, and she frequently hesitated before attempting new words. These challenges were starting to affect her confidence, motivation and willingness to participate in school activities.

To support her, I created calm, engaging, child‑centred sessions that focused on small, achievable steps. We worked on strengthening phonics knowledge, practising decoding strategies, and building comprehension through discussion, visuals and hands‑on activities. Each session offered consistent encouragement, gentle guidance and opportunities for her to experience success without pressure.

Gradually, her confidence began to grow. She became more willing to try unfamiliar words, more motivated to read independently, and increasingly proud of her progress. As her skills improved, her self‑esteem strengthened, and she started to view herself as capable and ready to learn.

By the end of our work together, she had made significant progress in both decoding and comprehension. More importantly, she developed a positive, resilient attitude towards learning. She transitioned smoothly into her chosen Year 2 school, where she is now more independent, engaged and enthusiastic about participating in school life.

This case study shows how patient, personalised support can transform not only a child’s reading skills but also their confidence, motivation and overall relationship with learning.
