Early Years – Phonics and Fine Motor Skills
I taught a girl, who found phonics challenging. She struggled with recognising sounds and early blending CVC words. Fine motor development was also identified as an area requiring additional support. I provided regular targeted support through structured phonics activities, blending practice, hands-on learning experiences. We focused on recognising letter sounds, segmenting and blending simple CVC words and building confidence through repetition and encouragement. With consistent sessions she could read the sounds and apply them when reading simple words.
I introduced fine motor activities such as finger gym exercises, cutting tasks and paper tray activities to strengthen hand muscles and improve pencil control. These activities supported her readiness for writing and helped increase concentration and independence during learning tasks. Over time, she made noticeable progress. She became more confident when attempting to blend sounds together and showed improvement in reading CVC words. She also began recognising their own name more independently.
